These ’90s Ads for AT&T’s “You Will” Campaign Surprisingly Predict Today’s Technologies
In this series of scarily on-point ads from 1993 and 1994, AT&T promised that in the near future people would be taking classes from thousands of miles away, getting medical advice from doctors who aren’t even in the room, and sending memos on the beach. Well, whaddya know! Obviously, a telecom company’s got a vested interest in making predictions about future technology it can back up; there’s no way they would have made these commercials if researchers weren’t already years into designing the kinds of products that today fulfill almost all of these pipe dreams. But if you’re more used to lamenting on the absence of flying cars, jetpacks, and the like, maybe this will sprinkle your worldview with just a little bit of capitalist-tinged optimism.
