The Peach Kings: “Be Around”
LA-based duo The Peach Kings describe their sound as “somewhere between Portishead and Led Zeppelin, The Kills and Nancy Sinatra, The Cramps and Roy Orbison.” With that kind of eclectic pool of inspiration, Paige Wood and Steve Dies turn out dark indie rock tracks built on bluesy riffs and Wood’s evocative vocals. On “Be Around,” the lead single from the group’s recent Mojo Thunder EP, The Peach Kings create an image of a smokey dive bar at last call. The Paul Trillo-directed music video plays on the psychedelic quality of the song, using an effect to emulate a double exposure photography technique. This ties into the lyrics. The song opens with Wood singing, “Every silver lining’s got a razor’s edge, you know.” By showing The Peach Kings as translucent silhouettes, Trillo personifies the duality and dichotomy of human nature shown in Wood’s lyrics.
