#TBT: Noah and the Whale “The First Days of Spring”
The Vernal Equinox has arrived—spring is here. A time of rebirth and rejuvenation. A time to put away your snow-boots and bring out your floral-print dresses. A time to forget the worries of the past and look optimistically towards the future. And that’s just what this song is about. Noah and the Whale‘s second studio album, The First Days of Spring, deals with the break up of singer Charlie Fink and former band member Laura Marling. And though the music sounds moody and brooding throughout, there is a general sense of optimism running through the album. The title track opens with ominous drums and strings, but Fink sings, “It’s the first day of spring/And my life is starting over again.” He continues on with the adage, “For I do believe that everyone has one chance to fuck up their lives.”
So with spring starting today, keep that in mind. You’ve got at least one chance to fuck up your life because “there’s hope in every new seed and every flower that grows on the Earth.” You are that seed and that flower.
Noah and the Whale released their most recent album Heart of Nowhere last year via Vertigo Records.
