How a Government Program Helped Destroy a Movement in the U.S. Southwest
Even if you’ve heard of COINTELPRO, the secret government program designed to disrupt and destroy a range of political movements within the United States, you may not have known about the Chicano movement or its own entanglement with the FBI and local police. Most active in the ’60s and ’70s, the movement hoped to empower Mexican Americans politically and economically. Much like the Black Panthers, American Indian Movement, and other groups of the time, they befell harassment and even violence from the right wing, the local police, and the FBI.
