Vidding 101: A History of Online Media Fandoms
If you, like me, have been online for a decade or longer, then likely you’ve got at least a working familiarity with the world of online media fandoms: communities created to discuss and celebrate TV shows, video games, books, and other constructed cultural universes. But while you may have seen an AMV or three (or twenty, or…), you may not know as much about the communities that form around “vidding,” the general practice of setting clips from beloved shows to music. Vidder Here’s Luck explains how she got into vidding, as well as give a general description of the practice. She talks about vidding’s connection with feminism and the little known pre-internet history of remix videos. It’s great as both a primer and a historical document of media fandoms.
