Artist Spotlight: Will Laren’s Loud Goofballs

“Loud goofballs in loud-patterned shirts.” This is how illustrator Will Laren describes his aesthetic, and we can’t think of a better explanation. His colorful illustrations are hilarious one-panel comics about strange, outlandish characters who loudly speak about innocuous topics (like wine in the pool or bee culture) and wear, well, loud-patterned shirts. Laren says his work is mostly inspired by photographs that he later builds a phrase or joke around. “A lot of characters I draw are trying to convince themselves or people around them of their own success or importance, which I think I and hopefully other people can relate to,” he tells The Pulp Zine. “A lot of the insecure aspects of ourselves are easier to swallow when it’s blown up to an insane extreme.”

If you want your own personal loud goofball in a patterned shirt, check out one of his many zines or prints he sells in his shop.
