On Delia Derbyshire, an Oft-Forgotten Innovator in Electronic Music
Even if you don’t know Delia Derbyshire, you may know her work–the most famous example is the opening theme to Doctor Who. But even greater is her influence on electronic music, especially as an electronic musician who worked before the advent of synthesizers and most of the toolkits electronic musicians are familiar with today. The Delian Mode, a short documentary by Kara Blake, explores the music and influence of Derbyshire both at the time—she was making remarkably haunting and experimental music for mainstream television and radio—and on generations of musicians who followed her. It’s a welcome tribute to a woman whose artistic reach goes far beyond the popularity of her name.
