Watch Philip Labes Dance Around in a Superhero Cape in “Hero”

There’s something special about Philip Labes. The L.A.-based singer/songwriter writes whimsical pop songs with a child-like perspective and an ear for indelible melodies. His voice is warm and round with a sort of 1950s quality that makes for a strange mixture with his twee indie-pop. On his latest G-G-Ghost! EP all these qualities shine brightly together, especially on opening track and lead single “Hero.” The up-tempo song is driven by a melodic bassline and Labes’s sweet vocal croons. Despite the happy exterior, the song is about insecurities, and imagining what it would be like to be a Hero so that “when I mess up/In the end it will be alright.”

The music video shows Labes on the campus of USC wearing a cape and dancing to the song. He encourages strangers to join him in dancing fearlessly. Then they all go down a big inflatable slide, which is adorable. It captures that special child-like quality that makes Labes so interesting and memorable.
