Snarky Platformer “That One Coin” Redefines What It Means to Win
At their hearts, platformers are pretty basic: jump over objects, avoid enemies, and collect coins. Completionists like myself tack hours onto their gameplay with their desire to collect every…single…coin. That One Coin takes that concept and turns it on its head to change how you win and lose.
All you need to do to win is to collect one coin. It transports you immediately to a victory screen and the game ends…but avoid the coins and the game ramps up its difficulty, begging you to just collect your coin already. You want to win, don’t you? The game’s environment gets increasingly complex as it tries to manipulate your little sprite into diving into a pool of coins or colliding with moving coins, asking why you don’t want to win, because surely everyone wants to win. That is in fact the point of a game…isn’t it?
Funny, clever, and a wee bit snarky, That One Coin is a fun little inversion of typical platformers.
