Piana: “In Silence”
It’s been seven years since Piana‘s last album Eternal Summer cemented her place as one of the more interesting musicians coming out of Japan. Since her debut, her sound has evolved and matured as she exchanged her clunky, experimental electronic roots for a more full-bodied, contemporary one. Her new album Muse is Piana at her most accessible. “In Silence” in particular sounds like the dramatic lead single for some soundtrack. The song builds and builds, exploding into a climax of frantic guitars and plunky violins. Her usual fragile voice is now loud and assertive, and her penchant for romanticism is now dark, sophisticated. For an album seven years in the making, it feels like the wait has paid off. Welcome back.
