Short Film Documents Mass Protests in Greek Square

Greek protests against the IMF and European Union-backed austerity measures have been ongoing since the worst of the Great Recession hit the Hellenic Republic. Several of the most significant popular demonstrations were centered around Syntagma Square, a prominent town square in central Athens. Greek filmmaker Yiannis Biliris examines the legacy of some of the 2010 protests in Syntagma Square by contrasting the atmosphere of the square during the protests with the seemingly peaceful and depoliticized space a year later, reinforcing the legacy of public space as a site of popular struggle and highlighting the often invisible history of mass protest Syntagma carries. A powerful film.
