The Work of Fumi Nakamura

When I first saw the cover art of Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq’s new album Animismwho also just won the 2014 Polaris Prize, I was struck by the familiarity of it. The art is done by NYC-based illustrator Fumi Nakamura aka miniaturemouse, and her work has been featured just about everywhere, from the pages of NYLON to the walls of Thinkspace Gallery. She even has a line of Puma t-shirts with her designs. Her work is detailed and intricate, with a consistent flower motif that keeps her work looking unmistakably hers. Her most recent crop of illustrations have a title Fiona Apple would be happy with–Simply in Vocabulary, Cosmic in Scale, Stately in Their Rhythms, Deeply Emotional in Their Impact–which says more about her work than I can.
