“Singing In a White Room” Is an Archive of Music Videos’ Most Common Trope
Music videos are expensive. As much as every artist would love to produce an epic million dollar 15-minute video, sometimes it’s just easier to get the band together, throw up a white sheet, and rock out…or dance out…or do whatever this is.
Singing in a White Room is a tumblr that posts nothing but music videos with white backgrounds, from Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” to Rick James’ “Superfreak.” Sometimes they bend the rules a little and post videos that simply have white motifs instead of an actual plain white background, but most of the videos are the standard “I’m singing/dancing in a white room!”
The tumblr is maintained by copywriter Peter Rinko, who started the project when watching the video for Information Society’s 1988 hit “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy).” “It definitely left its mark on me,” he said, “so much so that some 20 years later I was like, ‘How many other videos are out there that only take place in white rooms?’” As of today, Rinko has compiled more than 195 videos for the site. How does he do it? We suspect he uses Google video searches–for the color white, of course.
