Douglas Dare: “Caroline”
London label Erased Tapes is better known for their avant garde ambient artists than, well, anything else. So it’s no surprise that singer-songwriter Douglas Dare jarringly stands out amongst his more esoteric labelmates. His latest single “Caroline” is probably his most accessible, taking an approach to music that never gets old: pouring your heart out on a piano (over a girl, of course). “Caroline” is about missed opportunities, unsent letters, and lamenting the one that got away. However, even Dare’s stripped-down approach has hints of his murky ambient roots, with moody production that rises up toward the end of the song like a cloud of smoke. If you ever needed music to personify the feeling of walking alone in the rain on your way to work, this is it. You can purchase Whelm from Erased Tapes.
