Robert Henke Codes His Way Into Fragile Territory
Video that serves to document gallery-installed art might be seen as having some inherent issues with accuracy of representation; one can question whether a film captures the “full” or “real” experience of whatever the artwork might be presumed to be. But maybe if you’re willing to put that question aside, it’s easier to judge the video documentation as a work of its own. I’m more interested in the second approach for these scenes from Fragile Territories, an installation by Robert Henke that ran in Nantes, France last winter. It may be that the sense of foreboding dark ambience is different from what many visitors experienced during the piece’s stay, but the video is a meditative and immersive experience in its own right.
