“Illuminate,” a Black and White Pixelated Video About Strange Worlds and Lost Love

The last we heard from animator Nicolas Ménard he directed the amazing animated short Somewhere. His most recent project is the music video for Tourist’s song “Illuminate.” The video is a black and white pixelated world with an unusual premise:

In 1992, a man receives love letters in Korean. Since Google Translate doesn’t exist yet, he’s left confused. What could this mean?

The video uses repetition and old school graphics inspired by classic video games to create a cold, sterile atmosphere that’s reminiscent of pixel artists like Uno Moralez and Dusan Cezek. In the gallery we included some GIFs from the video, but we also recommending watching the full video.
