Woodshock: “Boyhood” Director Richard Linklater’s First 1985 Short Film
Before making his mark with Before Sunset and Boyhood, director Richard Linklater‘s first film was a short documentary he shot with a friend back in 1985. The documentary focused on music festival Woodshock, an ’80s wannabe of the famous Woodstock music festival that took place at Austin, Texas’ Waterloo Park. The 7-minute video features tons of local artists, including Daniel Johnston (from The Devil and Daniel Johnston) and…a bunch of drunk people who probably forgot this video ever existed. The rest of the video is a blurry snapshot of the usual music festival imagery: hippies, PBR, and people screaming “Woo!” over music. The whole thing might look incredibly amateur, but Linklater released Slacker just six years later. See? Everyone starts somewhere.
