    Commiato
    Dear
    Ettore Serra
    poetry
    is the world humanity
    one’s own life
    flowering from the word
    the limpid wonder
    of a delirious fermet

    When I find
    in this my silence
    a word
hewn out is in my life
    like an abyss

    Brothers
    What regiment are you from
    brothers?

    A word
    trembling in the night
    An unfurling leaf

    In the agonised air
    the involuntary rebellion
    of man confronting
    his fragility

    Brothers

    Ennui
    Even this night will pass

    This solitary wandering
    the wavering shadows on tramlines
    on the damp
    asphalt

I watch the heads of cabbies
    nodding
    as they doze

    Eternal
Between the flower that is gathered and the one that
    is given
    the inexpressible nothing

These beautiful illustrations, created by Cat O’Neil, were featured in a new collection of translated poems by Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti. She was given four poems and told to create her own visual interpretations. The results are stunning illustrations that capture the stark modernism of Ungaretti’s words while also adding a more personal touch. In the gallery we included all four illustrations along with their respective poems. Enjoy!
