CYOA in the Satirical Game “The Mysterious Shadows of Skullshadow Island”
Clickhole is known more for their mockery of Buzzfeed than they are for their presence in video games, but demonstrating that there are no limits to their satire is The Mysterious Shadows Of Skullshadow Island. Spoofing text-based adventure games, The Mysterious Shadows follows the adventures of two mystery-solving brothers (TM) as they paddle out to a strange island that is rumored to be haunted.
Or, you know, be infested with drug dealers. Whichever seems more likely.
Anyway, to the collective surprise of pretty much the entire Internet, The Mysterious Shadows is a remarkably accurate and extremely playable satirical game, a nice way of killing 20 minutes chuckling at the Hardy Boys-esque mishaps you and your brother can fall into. Surprises wait around every corner, but the biggest surprise is just how fun this game is.
Like any good work of satire, The Mysterious Shadows does not require prior knowledge of Joe and Frank Hardy or adventure games in general, standing perfectly well on its own as a novel. And, even when the satire is stripped away, at its core is a perfectly serviceable game with a real mystery and a surprising twist–provided you can make it there alive.
