I know it’s a little unusual to write about two Icelandic bands back-to-back, but this track was too good to ignore once it cartwheeled into my inbox last week. Mammút are a five-piece band from Iceland who have been making music since 2003 and are pretty popular in their own country. Their last album, Komdu til mín svarta systir, won the Icelandic Music Award for Best Album along with their song “Salt,” which won Best Song of the Year. To commemorate signing to British label Bella Union, the band re-released “Salt” in English, which is what you’re listening to right now. With booming production, an alt-grrl spirit, and a cathartic build-up, you would have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy this. Mammút’s career trajectory? First Iceland, then the world.
