The Holydrug Couple “Light or Night”
Brooklyn’s Sacred Bones Records is slowly becoming one of my favorite labels. With eclectic labelmates like Jenny Hval and Blanck Mass, it’s surprising how well a psychedelic group like The Holydrug Couple fits in. Their sophomore album Moonlust sounds exactly what you expect–dreamy melodies, nostalgic ’70s rock, and mopey psychedelia. It’s the type of music to listen to while getting baked under the stars while twirling around in a flower headpiece. If that last sentence alarmed you, then maybe this isn’t for you. But its “by-the-numbers” approach to psych rock is one of the things I love best about it. Like a more spacey Toro y Moi, The Holydrug Couple captures that retro feeling of good summer vibes spent sitting in the back of a VW bug. If you feel like getting lost in a trance, give this a spin.
