Brooklyn singer Empress Of has been earning a lot of attention and praise in the indie pop world this year thanks to a string of singles and her Systems EP. Poised to break even bigger next year, the singer has recently offered up a new single that shows she has what it takes. Where her previous singles have been more on the indie side of things, “Realize You” finds Empress Of going for a dancier electro-pop not unlike CHVRCHES or Robyn. But she retains her cool and restrained vocals that keep the track from sounding like it’s trying too hard to be mainstream. Built over an arpeggiated synth groove and unusually moving chords, Empress Of sings a strange and intense love song. “Freedom ain’t free if I can’t get free with you/ Just like me ain’t me if I can’t be me with you.” She also sings “I want to be your boyfriend and I want to be your girlfriend,” and Chris DeVille over at Stereogum points out that her Twitter bio states, “Music is my boyfriend,” suggesting that maybe this song is actually about “giving yourself over to glorious sounds.”
No word yet on another official release, but hopefully Empress Of continues to experiment with different styles like this dip into electro-pop. If you’ve been missing out, be sure to check out the Systems EP.
