Time-Lapsed Film Yields a Renewed Look at the City

Multimedia artist Lam Ho Tak whipped up this well-paced time-lapse video of metropolitan hustle and bustle in CITY #3721, and the results are less played-out than that description probably sounds. He uses time-lapse to effectively re-present the busy regularities of mechanized traffic in such a way that the cars, buses, and people begin to look like miniature replicas rather than the real thing. Interestingly, I very much liked the way the city was presented in the film, which is potentially at odds with the critique Ho Tak presents in the video’s description—he questions “whether development provides a better life for citizens, or if it only makes a country’s GDP look better.” Whatever your answer to that proposal, CITY #3721 is worth a few minutes of your time.
