A Much-Needed Film About Haitians Helping Haitians

Challenging the oft-spun narratives of the helpless poor in need of “White Saviors,” Grace + Mercy, a film by Luis Peña, introduces us to a brother and sister who work providing community services in the wake of the 2010 earthquake that devastated much of Haiti. The film doesn’t avoid images of the damage Haitian communities suffered; instead, it focuses on people working to help restore communities they are already a part of. It’s the kind of intervention I often appreciate, and it’s well shot too, so check out the short on the way to learning more about the complexities of the Caribbean nation.
