Kelela: “Enemy”

One of the coolest sounding songs I’ve heard in a long time, “Enemy” is the second track on L.A singer Kelela‘s debut mixtape, Cut 4 Me. The track, produced by Nguzunguzu, has a raw, aggressive beat that feels like it would be at home on Kanye West’s Yeezus. But instead of hard-hitting rap to match the in-your-face production, Kelela offers a melodic RnB vocal performance. The combination is unusual and fantastic, and just when you think it’s over, fading away with an unnatural delay, it’s generous enough to come back and give us another minute of intense music.

If “Enemy” is any indication, we should expect great things from Cut 4 Me, which comes out on October 1st.
