Bong Redila’s One-Panel Children Stories
As adults, it’s easy to forget how weird things aimed at children can be. It’s easy to look back on our own childhood and conclude that it was nothing but Sesame Street and Babysitter’s Club books, but what about this? Or what about…well, we can’t think of any others at the moment. But let’s just admit it: children’s books can be creepy. And sometimes it takes a grown-up outlook to really appreciate the artistry of such books.
Bong Redila is an artist/illustrator whose quirky drawings are perfect for telling child-like tales of monsters, magic, and other child-like oddities. His Borderline series is an entire Tumblr devoted to single panel comics that tell a story. From whimsical comedy to fantasy elements, the comics range in style but are all united in their oddity. Redila also draws longer comics, which he keeps in a separate blog. We particularly like Arapaap, which shows a different side to his work outside his usual “children storybook” style.
In an effort to help victims of the recent typhoon that hit the Philippines, he’s also currently selling several of his prints to raise money. All the proceeds will be sent to the Philippine Red Cross and other disaster relief charities.
