Kitten: “Like A Stranger”
L.A-based Kitten has mastered the art of the retro pop song. Whether it’s the ’90s shoegaze of “G#” or the ’60s pop of “Japanese Eyes,” the group always manages to sound ‘authentic’ and exciting. The title track from their recent Like A Stranger EP might as well be straight from the late-’80s/early-’90s pop scene. Like Janet Jackson or Madonna at that time, it has punchy gated drums, reverbed synths, and silky guitar riffs. And now we finally get a music video for the song. Directed by Dannel Escallon, the black and white video features the band performing in an empty warehouse and prominently features singer Chloe Chiadez. Oh, and there’s a jaguar, which is always exciting. The song puts hooks next to hooks, each one stronger and catchier than the last, and it comes complete with a breathy spoken word interlude to give it that “Vogue” feeling. The song has an electric energy running throughout, and Chiadez’s powerful vocals are no small part of that. The band is currently going through a transition period as it was just announced that the guys in the band are leaving. Chiadez is definitely strong enough to keep going on her own, so hopefully her and her label keep the momentum going.
You can get the Like A Stranger EP here on iTunes and hopefully there’ll be more great music from Kitten soon.
