“Somewhere,” an Melancholic Short Film About Long-Distance Relationships
Somewhere is a poignant film about the distance between loved ones, animated by Nicolas Ménard and scored by Rich Vreeland. Somewhere moves slowly, so there’s lots of time to linger on the more beautiful moments. The somewhat surreal premise (a spaceman, leaving on a long journey, leaves behind one of his arms for his partner to remember him by) allows for some touching and not-too-heavy-handed “thinking of you” moments. The minimal sound design also deserves credit here; I felt the weight of the spaceman’s sigh upon each quiet release. The film was produced during Ménard’s first year of art college, so hopefully we can expect more good work from him soon.
