Seventeen-year-old Låpsley might just be the Next Big Thing in ambient electronic music. The Liverpool-based singer/producer has been putting out simple but idiosyncratic tracks for the past few months, but it’s her latest song, “Station,” that has been attracting so much attention. The song features a simple chord progression played by a wavering synth pad, sparse percussion, and ethereal melodies. At first listen, you might think it’s a duet between Låpsley and a male singer, but actually all the vocals on the track are the songwriter herself, some natural and some digitally altered. To match the minimal, moody music, the Mike Brits directed music video shows Låpsley singing along in a dark room, with a moving projection shining on her face.
The young singer is hoping to release a full-length album later this year, so be sure to keep an eye out for more music from Låpsley.
