Lucien Ng Designs a Hypothetical Viral Campaign for Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android”

Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” might be one of the most popular songs of all time, but what if it was repackaged and redesigned as a viral campaign? That’s what graphic designer Lucien Ng had in mind when he designed a project based on the popular Radiohead track. Ng designed CD covers, posters, and promotional fliers based around his unique interpretation of the song:

“My interpretation of Paranoid Android is a violent allegory where the victim finally exacts revenge on his tormentors while mocking their beliefs and their traits. The record cover was designed based around this concept. But for my viral campaign the victim becomes the tormentor and turns people into his puppets. It has this high brow attitude to it where the ‘tormentor’ decides who is worthy of his music.”

In addition to the “dangling eye” promotional art, the viral campaign involves asking people to wear a Guy Fawkes mask, attracting attention both in the real world and online as people start wondering, “What’s with all these Guy Fawkes masks?” People who upload their mask photos to Instagram then receive a personal invitation from the band (aka the band’s publicist) to attend a super exclusive listening party.

It’s a neat concept. And to think, in the ’90s all we had were boring music videos. Sigh.
