Sleep Deprivation Gets Animated in “It’s Called ‘Moon’”

Artist and animator Emanuele Kabu was having trouble getting enough sleep, but he managed to turn his sleep-deprived days into something beautiful: It’s Called “Moon.” In a style reminiscent of Jake Fried’s hand-drawn work, the center of the video is a dynamic drawing that incrementally transforms into a new one with each frame, using sparing but careful use of color for contrast. Concentric circles in the animation evoke the stellar orbits of the night, and shots of the human eye literally cracking visually captures the feeling I sometimes get when I’ve been awake for far too long. This video is definitely more enjoyable than a bad night’s sleep.
