Dance to the Beat (and Save Princesses) in “Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians”
Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is worth a look just for the premise alone: a puzzle exploration game that takes the background music and brings it to the front. I knew I had to check this game out eventually, and not just because the damsel-in-distress and I share a name (get me a tiara and call me Princess Melody). Beat is one of the legendary guardians of Symphonia who, alongside his sisters Harmony and Melody, dreams the music the entire world dances along to. One day he wakes up to find that the evil Prince Maestro has kidnapped Melody in an effort to make everyone dance to his tune instead…and so begins Beat’s adventure.
When it comes to aural delights, Beatbuddy definitely doesn’t pull its punches. Each underwater level has its own melody, everything you encounter pulses to the beat, and certain creatures will warn you of their incipient arrival with their own music slowly washing toward you. Beat, the hero of the story, will even dance in place if you stop moving, looking nothing so much like an iPod commercial. And if you don’t stop every now and then just to appreciate the gorgeous art, then you might as well hand over your eyeballs to someone else because you’re clearly not making full use of your sight anyway.
