“I Thought of Frida Kahlo” Beautifully Animates One Man’s Missed Encounter

Yes, I know “dude talks about a pretty lady he saw once” is one of the most well-worn genres of art ever. But when R.Leonard Miller’s gentle narration of his encounter with said woman on a train is paired with Katie Armstrong’s animated watercolor, the story becomes evocative in new ways. Armstrong’s visuals are really inventive—at times, it appears small portions of what could be standalone paintings move to animate and highlight the driving points of the narrative. Paired with some musical interludes, this is just plain ol’ good (visual) storytelling. (Fun fact: Armstrong animates in between her shifts as a regular Vimeo employee.)
