Playing with Darkness in Egyptian Hip Hop’s Video for “SYH”
One of the first things I noticed about this video for Egyptian Hip Hop‘s single “SYH” is that I was pretty clearly not listening to hip hop music made by Egyptians. One of the first visual traits that stood out, however, was the video’s color palette of black and blue, set against constant shadows and occasional flashes of brightness. Directed, shot, and edited by Isaac Eastgate, much of the music video seems to be a series of interesting lighting experiments occasionally accentuated with glimpses of the psychedelic/progressive pop band itself. It’s an interesting and non-conventional take on a strong single; maybe Eastgate will find some time to direct something this cool for an actual Egyptian hip hop group, too.
