L.A. RnB newcomer Avriel, or King avriel as she sometimes goes by, is definitely an artist to watch for those interested in indie RnB. Like fellow LA singer Kelela, Avriel is bold, refreshing, and experimental. Her voice is intimate and emotive, which works especially well on her new track “Prelude.” A prelude to what, you might ask? She explains on RapGenius:
I was inspired by the story Kendrick told in Keisha’s Song. I wanted to create a prelude to his story by using my own experiences, because I felt so connected to Keisha’s struggle. I hoped the song would shed light on the cycle of abuse and neglect of black women, and how it negatively affects everyone in our community on some level — even our men.
The MILESNATIVE produced track handles its heavy material exceptionally well, keeping the beat simple and allowing King avriel to take emotional control. And along with the references to Kendrick Lamar’ song, you can find some lyrical and melodic allusions to Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You” and Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love.”
In addition to “Prelude,” you can also stream a preview of her upcoming single “Freedom.”
